Phnom Penh: Workers at the WP SPORTS (CAMBODIA) CO., LTD factory in Prey Tay village, Prey Tay commune, Svay Taep district, Svay Rieng province, have vowed to continue their strike if their demands are not met.
Workers at the factory told the Collective Union of Movement of Workers (CUMW), on condition of anonymity, that “there have been some successful solutions, but if our demands are not met, we will continue to strike.”
However, the relevant parties, including the dispute resolution team from the Svay Rieng provincial labor department, have intervened in the case, but the results have not yet been announced. Meanwhile, the workers have not yet elected their representatives, and there is currently no union representing them.
The source added that the strike aims to demand respect for the labor laws of the Kingdom of Cambodia and to prevent unjust termination of workers. The workers raised the following key points:
1. Request that the employer reinstate the 30 workers who were terminated by the factory owner.
2. New workers must be properly trained in necessary skills.
3. On national holidays, if workers are asked to work overtime, they must be paid on a specified date.
4. Request a monthly health care allowance of $5.
5. Deduct taxes on salaries exceeding 1 million riel (for example, 1,200,000 riel should be reduced by $5 or deducted according to the salary tax law as prescribed by law).
6. Workers must scan their faces three times a day: between 7:00 and 7:30 AM upon arrival at work, at 1:00 PM during the workday, and at 1:00 PM when leaving work. (If workers go out to eat at 12 noon, scanning is not required.)
