Phnom Penh: Unions continue to play a vital role in promoting workers’ rights and improving working conditions across Cambodia, particularly in the garment, handbag, footwear, and travel products sectors, which employ hundreds of thousands of workers. The Cambodian Workers’ Movement is an indispensable force in this progress.

Through collective bargaining and advocacy, unions have secured better wages, safer workplaces, and fair treatment for workers. Despite significant challenges, these professional organizations remain at the heart of efforts to enhance the quality of working life in the country.

One of the most notable contributions of unions is their active participation in minimum wage negotiations. Every year, union representatives collaborate with employers and government officials to set wage standards that directly impact workers’ livelihoods.

Additionally, unions play a crucial role in negotiating collective agreements that improve working hours, benefits, and workplace safety. Their presence ensures that workers have a unified voice to raise concerns and seek solutions—especially important in sectors where individual workers have limited bargaining power.

Factories with union representation tend to comply with labor standards more consistently than those without. This compliance results in tangible improvements such as higher wages, regulated working hours, and safer work environments.

Beyond economic gains, unions champion social issues including gender equality and protection against workplace discrimination, contributing to a more inclusive labor market.

However, unions in Cambodia continue to face significant obstacles that hinder their effectiveness and independence from employers. Union leaders and members often endure intimidation, harassment, and even dismissals because of their advocacy efforts.

Despite these challenges, unions remain indispensable in Cambodia’s labor landscape. Continued advocacy by trade unions is crucial to securing fair wages, decent working conditions, and protections for vulnerable groups such as women and migrant workers. As Cambodia’s economy develops, the resilience and commitment of trade unions will be key to promoting dignity, justice, and equity in workplaces across the country.
